RE: No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, Section 1116

Dear Parent/Guardian:

To comply with the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, we are giving you timely notice that Academy of Arts and Sciences has been identified as being in School Improvement (SI) – 2007-2008. School Improvement means the school did not meet Ohio’s goals in reading, mathematics or attendance for two consecutive years or more. Academy of Arts and Sciences has been identified as in School Improvement status based on its performance in 3rd grade reading proficiency, and attendance goal was not metThe student groups were not required for AYP due to the student group size being below the minimum number for statistical reliability.  Our Local Report Card (http://www.ode.state.oh.us/report) card shows how our school compares to other similar schools. Following the federal guidelines regarding the school’s status, we are notifying you that you have the following options:

            1. You may continue to have your child attend the same community school.

            2. Students may return to their home public school. No Public School Choice transportation is required to be offered for this option.

            3. Students may be eligible to attend   Lorain Community School. This school is not in School Improvement status and may enter into an agreement to accept students. Free transportation will be offered for your child. Public School Choice may be limited due to insufficient resources. See the attachment for information about these schools’ staff qualifications, special programs and facilities.

Parents’ Right to Know

Regulations 200.61

September 1, 2008

Dear Parent,

Your child’s school receives Title I funding and is included under the regulations on the

“No Child Left Behind Act” (NCLB) that was signed into law by President Bush on

January 8, 2002.

NCLB requires:

  • Increased accountability for stated and local districts.
  • Greater choice for parents, especially those in low performing schools.
  • Greater flexibility for state and local education agencies in the use of federal

funding.

Under NCLB parents have a right to request professional qualifications of their

children’s teacher(s) or paraprofessional(s).  This letter is to inform you of your right to

ask for the following information about your children’s classroom teachers or paraprofessionals.

  • Whether Ohio has licensed the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she

 teaches.

  • Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status

through which Ohio licensing criteria have been waived.

  • The teacher’s baccalaureate degree major and whether the teacher has any advance degrees, and if so, the subject of the degrees.
  • Whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.

If you would like to receive specific information about your child’s teacher or paraprofessional, please contact the school.  Our school is fully committed to the success of your child.  We appreciate your partnership in our efforts to provide the best education for your child.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Liscano, AAS CAO                                                       Ms. Januzzi, LPA CAO
